Adapt and manage change To direct, supervise and control the project Project managers should not carryout project work, managing the project is enough. The project manager must define the project, reduce it to a set of manageable tasks, obtain appropriate resources and build a team to perform the work. The project manager must set the final goal for the project and motivate his/her team to complete the project on time. The project manager must inform all stakeholders of progress on a regular basis. The project manager must assess and monitor risks to the project and mitigate them. No project ever goes exactly as planned, so project managers must learn to adapt to and manage change.

Role of Project Manager Positive Environment Creator
Establish a working environment within the organization for effective and efficient functioning of individuals and groups. This environment s characterized by a common purpose, an intentional structure of roles, the removal of obstructions to performance and the motivation of individuals and groups to contribute to common goals. The manager then is an environment creator, and his/her job is to design and operate a set of conditions where people, working as individuals and in groups contribute towards the attainment of common goals

What is a problem? A problem is not the absence of a solution but an existing negative state: 'Crops are infested with pests' is a problem; 'No pesticides are available' is not. What is a ‘focal problem’? One that involves the interests and problems of the stakeholders present.

one problem ? Brainstorm and agree on one problem by each group Do’s & Don’ts of problems No big balloons or vague concepts e.g. no infrastructure Be precise e.g. no paved road from …. No absent solutions No non-existing problems The brainstorming exercise: (1) Commences by asking workshop participants to identify the main problems that the project will address (2) The main problems should be written on small pieces of card, and stuck on the wall. (3) High order problems should not be described as 'lack of' something, for example lack of knowledge, but instead they should be described as an effect, for example lack of knowledge may become 'destructive forest harvesting practices' (4) After all of the problems are displayed on the wall they should then be clustered into groups of similar issues (5) Problems that are duplicated can be discarded (6) At this stage a simple 'weeding' exercise can be undertaken. The aim of the weeding exercise is to remove any problems that are clearly not problems that can be addressed by the project.
