5-20 Rule If a nutrient is < 5%, it is LOW for that nutrient
If a nutrient is > 20%, it is HIGH for that nutrient 5% Daily Value (DV) or less is low – for nutrients you want to limit, choose foods with a low % DV. Nutrients to limit are saturated fat, trans fat, added sugar, cholesterol, and sodium. 20% Daily Value (DV) or more is high – for nutrients you want to get enough of, choose foods with a high % DV. Nutrients to get enough of are fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Ingredients Rule If a third grader can’t pronounce it or you don’t know what it is…don’t eat it. Also…If there are more than five-ish ingredients (or sugar is in the top three), its probably not good for you as it is most likely heavily processed. Ingredients: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, and vanilla. Ingredients: Whole Corn, Vegetable Oil, Corn Maltodextrin, Salt, Tomato Powder, Corn Starch, Lactose, Whey, Nonfat Milk, Corn Syrup Solids, Onion Powder, Sugar, Garlic Powder, Monosodium Glutamate, Cheddar Cheese, Dextrose, Malic Acid, Buttermilk, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Sodium Acetate, Artificial Color (Including Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 5), Sodium Caseinate, Spice, Citric Acid, Disodium Inosinate, and Disodium Guanylate.
