What is the difference between management and leadership?
“There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important. Management means to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge of or responsibility for, to conduct. Leading is influencing, guiding in direction, course, action, opinion. The distinction is crucial. Managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing. The difference may be summarized as activities of vision and judgment – effectiveness versus activities of mastering routines – efficiency” (Bennis and Nannus, 1997, p 20) What is the difference between management and leadership?

Leadership Management Model
The left and right sides are domains that we work in while we try to accomplish things On one hand – must work with ideas that have to be shared and shaped On the other hand – we work with people Leaders and managers work in BOTH domains but in different ways Leadership Management Model

Leader Domains Vision Work with ideas All great leaders have a vision
Provides direction and purpose The vision is what followers are seeking Your groups will need a shared vision when you first meet together Empowerment Working with people is less about telling them what to do and more about showing them who they could be Work with people to create more possibilities, not less Coach and model so that people become better How will you empower the team members in your group?

Management Domains Design
Design the processes that enables the group to achieve their vision Most under-celebrated skill Everything in the world was once needed to be designed Vision provides direction but design is the delivery vehicle Planning, organizing and creating a group structure without this – no vision will succeed Framework Allows people to be efficient in their work Setting up boundaries and rules that the group will respect Give people feedback to keep everyone productive Every “group” has a framework – ex: family, school, government Much enhance the productivity and satisfaction of each team member
10
Who am I? Which kind of person are you?
Most leadership tests only look at the leadership half of the circle and leave out management roles Leadership is more visible BUT management is essential to long term success Some members of the group will have strengths that others have as weaknesses Discuss in your groups during your first meeting where you think each of you is in the circle Use this information when assigning tasks! Who am I?
