2
The Geological Core Services of EPOS
3
The partners of the (sub) project
Geological surveys and research organisations … with a commitment to engage their sister organisations
4
The objectives Develop a number of generic services that will make geological data available for integration with other EPOS data Develop and take advantage of the synergy between the existing data infrastructure of the Geological Surveys and of the large amount of information produced by the research organisations and international communities Build on common standards of data infrastructures Use and potentially develop standards for specific data types Contribute to the harmonization among all Thematic Services
5
Objectives of Task To develop a number of generic services that will make geological data available for integration with other EPOS data
6
Data to be considered
7
Data to be considered Scientific Subsurface Data Geosurveys’ data
Geological maps at different scales Stratigraphic borehole data (including samples, cores, analyses, hydrogeological information) Geohazard databases and inventories (e.g. landslides, surface faulting etc.) Geological 3D and 4D models (catalogue) Scientific Drilling Data Borehole logs from scientific drillings (ICDP/IODP and core archives) Scientific Subsurface Data 3D and 4D scientific subsurface data, encompassing structural and numerical models (e.g., temperature, aquifers, and velocity models); access to associated raw data (e.g., drill hole data, seismic,…)
8
Example of Use Cases Simple (only one data type)
A researcher wants information about a m subsurface interval in a given area. -> borehole data Interdisciplinary (more data types from WP15) A researcher wants to find boreholes in granitic terrains. -> geological maps & borehole data Cross-disciplinary (datatypes from different TCS’es) A researcher wants to assess areas where land slides may occur in case of earthquakes -> seismological data, surface geological maps & landslide susceptibility maps
9
Services to be delivered
Development of «generic» services (with cookbooks) to facilitate implementation by geological surveys and research institutes Service that visualises borehole information such as logs, sampling/coring intervals and chemical analyses 3D/4D model catalogue service (specific metadata model) Surface geology service (WMS/WFS)
10
Standards The services will utilise standards where they exist
These standards will/could include; OGC standards (WMS, WFS, WCS) INSPIRE GeoSciML (geological information) O&M BoreholeML (boreholes) WITSML (well sites) GroundwaterML LAS (borehole logs) SEG-Y (seismic reflection data) Etc. Standards will be extended where needed in connection with standardization bodies
11
Preliminary architectural design (integration with Core of EPOS)
12
Governance, legal and sustainability issues
Each TCS (ie the Geological Thematic Services) will have to set up an agreement with “EPOS legal entity” to provide the services Common guidelines : data sharing principles Specific governance and funding for each TCS to be defined in a specific Consortium Agreement guarantee sustainability and openness “EPOS” will evaluate the TCSs according to those criteria
13
Organization of Geological TCS consortium
Strongly rely on EuroGeoSurveys existing organization and infrastructure (EGDI) Make sure to attract all surveys, research organizations and universities (involved or not in the project) Identify funding sources for sustainability… Additionally, 3 surveys (BGS – BRGM – GEUS) have been selected to host the EPOS core services, that will reinforce the integration
14
Conclusion A very ambitious long term commitment to build a EU multidisciplinary research platform for the Earth Sciences in Europe … and connected to global infrastructures as GEOSS A unique opportunity to have surveys and academic working together and sharing data with a wide community to advance on standard implementation (and development) to facilitate cross thematic data integration to further develop processing, simulation and visualization tools … to better address overall understanding of complex multi-scale geo-scientific questions
