1 Freshmen Q2 Week 5

2 Dramatic Elements: Soliloquy: an act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play. Long—usually a speech Aside: same as a soliloquy but much shorter– just a comment.

3 Important Quotes: Mercutio: “Nay, I’ll conjure too.
Scene One: Annotations: Mercutio: “Nay, I’ll conjure too. Romeo! Humours! Madman! Passion! Lover! Apear thou in the likeness of a sigh, Speak but one rhyme and I am satisfied. Cry but ‘Ay, me!’ Pronounce but ‘love’ and ‘dove’ ( ). What tone is Mercutio using? How can you tell?

4 Scene 2 ROMEO: He jests at scars that never felt a wound.
JULIET appears in a window above JULIET enters on the balcony. But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she. Be not her maid since she is envious. Her vestal livery is but sick and green, Is this a soliloquy or an aside? How can you tell?  lines 2-32 (32 lines long) Explain and analyze the extended metaphor. Personification of the moon

6 Scene 3 Friar Lawrence: Our Romeo hath not been in bed tonight.
Textual Evidence: Annotations: Friar Lawrence: Our Romeo hath not been in bed tonight. Romeo: That last is true. The sweeter rest was mine. Friar Lawrence: God pardon sin! Wast thou with Rosaline? Romeo: With Rosaline, my ghostly Father? No. I have forgot that name, and that name’s woe. How is this scene ironic?  It is situational– he is going to ask Friar Lawrence to marry Juliet and him, but what does the Friar assume? Think about Shakespeare characterization of Romeo and Juliet– how does he feel about their love as an author?

7 Scene 4 Textual Evidence Annotations Mercutio:
“More than prince of cats, I can tell you. O, he is the courageous captain of compliments. He fights as you sing prick-song, keeps time, distance, and proportion; rests his minim rests, one, two, and the third in your bosom: the very butcher of a silk button, a duellist, a duellist; a gentleman of the very first house, of the first and second cause: ah, the immortal passado! the punto reverso! the hay!” ( ). How does Mercutio characterize Tybalt? Butcher of silk button: so good with a sword he can aim and take a button. Passdo: forward thrust Punto reverso: backwards thrust

8 Scene 5 Important Quote: Annoations:
Nurse: “Your love says like an honest gentleman, and a courteous, and a kind, and a handsome, and, I warrant, a virtuous—Where is your mother?” (II.v.55-57). Why does the nurse ask where Juliet’s mother is?

9 Scene 6: Important Plot Events
Important Quote: Annotations: Friar Lawrence: “These violent delights have violent ends, and in their triumph die; like fire and powder, which as they kiss, consume” (II.vi.9-11). What two things is Friar Lawrence comparing in his simile? Why?
