How do we measure the weather?
Weather Tools How do we measure the weather?
2
MEASURING AIR PRESSURE
Air pressure is the pressing by the air, or the strength of the air A barometer measures the air pressure Low air pressure means stormy or bad weather High air pressure means sunny and good weather
3
BAROMETER
4
MEASURING TEMPERATURE
Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is Temperature is measured with a THERMOMETER
5
THERMOMETER A thermometer measures temperature in Degrees Celsius and Degrees Fahrenheit
6
MEASURING PRECIPITATION
Precipitation is any kind of water that falls from the sky: rain, snow, sleet or hail Precipitation is measured with a RAIN GAUGE OR SNOWBOARD
7
RAIN GAUGE
8
SNOWBOARD Like long rulers that people stick into the snow to see how high it is.
9
MEASURING WIND Wind is the movement of air. Wind is measured with a
WEATHER VANE and a ANEMOMETER
10
WEATHER VANE Shows Wind Direction
11
ANEMOMETER Measures Wind Speed
Watch the red cup. Count how many times the red one goes around in 1 min. Divide this number by 10. Your answer is the MPH of wind.
12
WIND SPEED Wind speed can also be estimated with a Wind Scale that shows the movements of objects around you.
13
This is one example of a wind scale.
14
HOMEWORK: MAKE YOUR OWN WIND SCALE
IN THE BOXES PROVIDED SHOW THE BIGGEST OBJECT THAT COULD BLOW GIVEN A CERTAIN SPEED OF WIND.
