Booker T. Washington: former slave; believed racism would end once blacks acquired useful labor skills and proved their economic value to society. W.E.B. Du Bois: civil rights activist; 1st African American to earn doctorate from Harvard. One of the cofounders of the NAACP. Susan B. Anthony: leader of the woman suffrage movement; helped found the NWSA in 1869. Upton Sinclair: muckraking journalist; wrote The Jungle in 1906 about the sickening conditions of the meatpacking industry. Theodore Roosevelt: 26th president; led the nation toward progressive reforms, anti-monopoly policies, and the Square Deal Woodrow Wilson: 28th president; he led America into WWI in order to “make the world safe for democracy”. Carrie Chapman Catt: women's suffrage leader who served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1900 and was the founder of the League of Women Voters.
