Meet Professor J. Carson
Professor Carson is Teaching 4 courses. Been teaching for 2 years. Serves on two committees. On a tenure-track. Advises 5 undergrads. Serves on the board of a small, local non-profit. Presents at conferences at least twice a year.

A Semester of Grading for Professor Carson
Assigns/Grades a weekly quiz in every course. Assigns/grades 4 exams in every course. Assigns/grades a midterm and final paper (10-15pgs long) in every course, with mandatory rough drafts for each. Every course has an average of 7 students. This means that he is grading: 420 quizzes, 112 exams, and approximately 1120 written pages in a semester.

Course Evaluations Came Back
Students said: He was lively and well prepared in class, but I never saw/heard from him in between. I did well in the course, but the quizzes were never graded before the next one was given to me. I felt that this was unfair. He had some great one-liners, but I wanted and needed more feedback on my papers. His course was offered a little later than usual, so maybe I was tired, but I don’t think I understood some of the basics and that messed me up.

Professor Carson meets with Learning Services
Learning Services said: He was lively and well prepared in class, but I never saw/heard from him in between. Did you know that if you use Canvas to communicate with your students, they can get immediate information wherever they are? Plus, all Canvas communication is recorded and stored for you. I did well in the course, but the quizzes were never graded before the next one was given to me. I felt that this was unfair. Stop grading quizzes by hand. Use Canvas to grade them automatically and provide feedback immediately to students when they are ready to receive it. For those students that struggle, Canvas can also adaptively release content to bring them up to speed.

Learning Services said: He had some great one-liners, but I wanted and needed more feedback on my papers. If you stop grading quizzes by hand, you’ll have more time to offer comments on “high-stakes” assignments like papers. Use Peer Review to have students develop critical skills and do the first draft edits for you! Also, consider using SpeedGrader to directly comment, correct and converse with students about papers. His course was offered a little later than usual, so maybe I was tired, but I don’t think I understood some of the basics and that messed me up. Offer quick, low-stakes assignments that provide a check of understanding/application – like discussion boards. You can quickly read through those to make sure students are on the right track and then address gaps in the next class. Use electronic surveys in Canvas to seek student input along the way.
