1 Map Elements 8th grade ES

2 Latitude and Longitude
The earth is divided into lots of lines called latitude and longitude.

3 Lines The lines measure distances in degrees. Longitude Latitude

4 Latitude How far North or South of the equator. Hint: Think a ladder

5 Where is the Equator? Equator The equator is 0 degree latitude.
It is an imaginary belt that runs halfway point between the North Pole and the South Pole. Equator

6 Longitude How Far East or West of the Prime Meridian Longitude
Think an orange

7 Where is the Prime Meridian?
The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, western Africa, and Antarctica.

8

9 Hemispheres By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.

10

11 A few Questions Is North Carolina in the N or S hemisphere?
Does the equator run through Africa? What Hemisphere is Australia in? Does the Prime Meridian Run through Asia

12 Compass A compass is a tool that helps the user know what direction one is headed. On a map, a compass or a compass rose helps the user locate these directions.

Compass Rose The needle on a compass is magnetized to point to the earth's north magnetic pole. Thus with a compass, a person can roughly tell which direction they are headed. There are four major or cardinal directions on a compass- north, south, east & west. In between are the directions northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest. Source:

14 Directions The cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west.
The intermediate directions are northeast, southeast, southwest and northwest. They help describe the location of places in relation to other places.

15 Scale Maps are made to scale; that is, there is a direct connection between a unit of measurement on the map and the actual distance. For example, each inch on the map represents one mile on Earth. So, a map of a town would show a mile-long strip of fast food joints and auto dealers in one inch.

16 Scale

17 Map Legends The legend is the key to unlocking the secrets of a map. Objects or colors in the legend represent something on the map. Human Population Legend

18 Can you understand this legend?

19 Life Expectancy Legend

20 Topographic Maps

21 What is a topographic map ??
A topographic map is a map that shows topography and features found on the earth's surface. Like any map it uses symbols to represent these features

22

23

24 Map features: Contour Lines
Contour lines are lines drawn on a map connecting points of equal elevation. If you walk along a contour line you neither gain or lose elevation.

25 Contour interval This vertical spacing is referred to as the contour interval.

26

27 So what does this map tell me?

28 Point A = 0 ft. Point A sits on the 0 ft line.
Point B = 10 ft. Point B sits on the 10 ft contour line.  Since all points on this line have an elevation of 10 ft, the elevation of point B is 10 ft. Point C ~ 15 ft. Point D ~ 25 ft. Point E ~ 8 ft.
