1 The Building Blocks of Life!
Cells!!! The Building Blocks of Life!

2 Basic Types of Cells Prokaryotic- does not have a true nucleus with a membrane or other organelles with membranes Example: bacteria

3 Eukaryotic- has a true nucleus surrounded by a membrane and other organelles with membranes

4 Eukaryotic Cells Animal Plant Fungi Protist

5 What are organelles? small structures that carry out specific functions in certain cells Allows cells to carry out many functions at same time

6 Cell Membrane “Gatekeeper” Protective layer around all cells
Has openings to allow things into and out of the cell Double layer membrane

7

8 Cytoplasm Gelatin-like substance inside the membrane
Holds organelles in place Constantly moving

9 Nucleus “Brain of the cell” Directs all the cell’s activities
Largest organelle in cell Contains chromatin-hereditary material (unwound DNA)

10 Cytoskeleton Made of microtubules and microfilaments
Help maintain shape of cell Direct traffic-movement of organelles

11 Endoplasmic Reticulum
“Transportation Center” Moves materials around in the cell Folded membrane with sacs and tunnels

12 Can be “Rough” or “Smooth”

13 Ribosomes “Protein Factories”
Makes proteins for the cell-gets directions from the nucleus Found in cytoplasm or attached to ER

14 Lysosomes “Clean up Crew”
Contain chemicals that digest wastes and worn-out cell parts Break down old cells and cell parts to be recycled

15 Golgi Bodies “UPS” Package and secrete materials
Stacks of flattened membranes Modify proteins, hormones, carbohydrates then transport within or out of cell

16 Mitochondria “Powerhouse of the Cell”
Generates energy for all the cell’s chemical reactions Breaks down food to release the energy Contain their own DNA Active cells have more

17 Vacuoles “ Storage containers”
Store or hold water, food, or other things the cell may need Can store waste materials waiting to leave the cell Are larger in plant cells

18

19 And In Plants...

20 Cell wall Found outside the cell membrane
Found in plant cells (and some bacteria) Supports and protects cell Made of a tough material called cellulose in plants

21 Chloroplasts Containers that hold chlorophyll
Gives plants their green color Needed for photosynthesis Found in plants and some protists (algae)
