Classification of Medicines
Medicines are drugs that are used to treat or prevent disease or other conditions. Drugs are substances other than food that change the structure of the body or mind.

Medicine Classifications
Medicines are sorted into four categories: Help prevent disease Fight infections Relieve pain Health maintain or restore health

Medicines that Prevent Disease
Vaccines are a preparation introduced into the body to stimulate an immune response.

Medicine that Fight Pathogens
Antibodies help fight bacteria. Antibodies cannot kills viruses.

Allergy medications Body regulating medicines (heart disease, blood pressure, insulin) Antidepressants/antipyschotic medicines Cancer treatment medicines

Medicines and the Body Medicines can have a variety of effects on the body and can cause different reactions in different people. Side-effects are reactions to medicine other than the one intended. Always tell your doctor if you are taking a prescription.

Medicines and the Body When medicines are taken together or when a medication is taken in combination with certain foods, the combination may produce different effects. Some interactions can be dangerous. Additive interaction occurs when medicines work together in a positive way. (muscle and joint pain)

Medicines and the Body Synergistic effect is an interaction of two or more medicines that results in a greater effect than when the medicines are taken alone. (one medicine increases the strength of another medicine) Antagonistic effect occurs when the effect of medicine is canceled or reduced when taken with another medication.

Medicines and the Body Tolerance is a condition in which the body becomes used to the effect of the drug. Withdrawal occurs when a person stops using a medicine he or she has a chemical dependence.

Analgesics are known as pain relievers.

Medicine Safety Purpose of FDA (Conforms drugs are safe)
Prescription medications are to be used only by the person whom they are prescribed. OTC Over the Counter drugs can be purchased without a prescription.

Medicine Misuse Medicines can be and are misused. Be sure to follow the instructions or you may be at risk for serious health consequences. Never: Take someone else's medications. Take too much or too little. Stop using without doctors knowledge. Mix medications.
