Do Now: Write the answers in your drill book. Start every answer on a new line. 1. We discussed why government is necessary last week. Now think about what a government does. What are some of the things that good governments do or should do? You can list what you think for this question, but do so in sentence format. 2. Today is 9/11. What happened on this day in 2001? Why was it such a big deal to the country? Have your parents or any other family members talked about what it was like to live through it? What did they say?

30 Independent Practice Directions: Read through the newspaper excerpts below and identify the purpose of government that is being reflected in each by using your notes. Then, explain how you knew that was the correct purpose. Complete the sample example with Mr. Krzys. Remember, this is a silent and independent activity.

31 Quick /11 President Obama and the white house are proposing a new tax rate for people earning more than $1 million a year. This new tax rate will force millionaires in America to pay at least the same percentage of their earnings in taxes as middle-income Americans who make far less per year. The Congress must vote in favor of the new tax rate in order for it to become a law. In your opinion, should the government raise taxes on millionaires and then redistribute (re-order) some of that money to people without jobs? Why or why not?

32 Today’s Exit Ticket Directions: Answer the questions below without the use of any notes. If you have a question, raise your hand. Trade with a partner – we are going to grade them in class.
