1
Li2O Warm UP Lithium Oxide How would YOU name this compound… QUESTION
ANSWER
2
Chemical Names & Formulas
Chapter 9
3
What you will have to name…
Ionic Compounds Ionic Compounds w/ Transition Metals Covalent Compounds Acids Bases (Same as Ionic)
4
Naming Ions Cations Representative Metals Transition Metals
Same name as the element Example: Na1+ sodium ion Transition Metals Same name as element with charge written as a roman numeral Example: Cu2+ copper (II) ion Polyatomic Ions Do not change the name! Leave the same as shown on Reference Table Example: NH4+ ammonium ion
5
Naming Ions Anions Nonmetals Change the ending to -ide
Example: P3- phosphide ion Polyatomic Ions Do not change the name! Leave the same as shown on Reference Table Example: SO32- sulfite ion
6
Naming IONIC Compounds
Review: What is an Ionic Compound? CATION + ANION In order to name, take the name of the cation and add it to the name of the anion! NaCl Na1+ - sodium ion Cl1- - chloride ion NaCl = sodium chloride
7
Practice MgCO3 Ra3P2 BeBr2 Al2O3 K2S
Name the following ionic compounds: MgCO3 Ra3P2 BeBr2 Al2O3 K2S Magnesium carbonate Radium phosphide Beryllium bromide Aluminum oxide Potassium sulfide
8
You need to know… How to determine the charge of the CATION!
If not a representative metal, you have to determine the charge by looking at the charge of the ANION! Example: PbO2 Oxygen is the ANION and has a -2 charge. There are 2 oxygens making the charge -4. What does the charge of the Pb have to be? WHY?! - Because it is a NEUTRAL compound. HOW DO I KNOW? There isn’t a charge in the right corner. You will ALWAYS know the charge of the ANION! PbO2 – lead (IV) oxide
9
Which Transition Metals HAVE a specific charge?
Silver (Ag) - always 1+ Zinc (Zn) - always 2+ Cadmium (Cd) - always 2+ Therefore, you DO NOT have to write the roman numeral to represent their charges.
10
Which representative metals DON’T have a specific charge?
Lead (Pb) - can be 4+ or 2+ Tin (Sn) - can be 4+ or 2+ You MUST write the roman numeral to represent the charge for these two cations.
11
Naming Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals
In order to name an ionic compound containing a transition metal, you must write the charge of the cation as a roman numeral in parentheses. Example: Fe2O3 Iron (III) oxide
12
Practice CuSO4 Ba3P2 LiBr FeO Ag2S Name the following ionic compounds:
Copper (II) sulfate Barium phosphide Lithium bromide Iron (II) oxide Silver sulfide
