Local Citizenship Civics, Grade 10, Open (CHV2O) Mock City Council One Million Dollar Question and Local Issues Letter to the Editor Culminating Activity Students will be assigned in groups and given a local issue to research. Each student within the group will take on a different role or perspective in relation to the issue and present this viewpoint at the mock city council. The goal of this activity is persuade the class into thinking that their local issue, deserves to be allocated one million dollars. Students will then, write a letter to the editor revealing their opinion on which local issue deserves the funding the most. Expectations Identify similarities and differences in the ways power is distributed in groups, institutions, and communities (e.g., in families, classrooms, municipalities) to meet human needs and resolve conflicts. Communicate the results of inquiries into important civic issues, using a variety of forms (e.g., discussions and debates, posters, letters to elected officials, Web pages, visual organizers, dramatizations). Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which individual citizens can obtain information and explanations or voice opinions about important civic matters (e.g. by communicating with the appropriate elected officials or bureaucratic departments; by writing letters or s to the media; by organizing petitions; by voting) Assessments Assessments Students will develop inquiry skills to research, organize, and locate relevant information on matters of civic importance. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of local citizenship through in-class presentations, discussions, letter writing, and visual displays. Students will incorporate critical thinking skills to understand and synthesis different perspectives.
