It’s all Greek to me - what did the Greeks do for us?
English Fiction work will focus on character and settings using texts about Ancient Greece Non-fiction work will explore biographical and autobiographical writing. We shall also explore performance poetry. Science The classes will explore and test materials and their properties. They will investigate conductivity, magnetism, dissolving and reversible and irreversible changes. R.E Classes will complete the unit ‘What does it mean for Christians to believe that God is holy and loving?’ followed by ‘What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today’. Computing The children will be learning how to create effective multimedia presentations to inform others about Greece. They will also develop their coding skills using Scratch to make maze games. P.S.H.C.E (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) This term the we will work on the theme of ‘New Beginnings’. Children will explore different feelings, discuss different kinds of responsibilities, rights and duties in the community and develop an understanding the need to respect personal boundaries including protective boundaries Maths In Y5, place value, the four number operations, statistics and area and perimeter are in focus In Y6, place value, number operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions and position and direction are in focus this term. It’s all Greek to me - what did the Greeks do for us? Upper School. Autumn Term 2017. History and Geography Topic focus – To learn about life in Ancient Greece. Launch Activity – Design and make a Trojan Horse. We shall explore many aspects of Life in Ancient Greece including family life, schooling, religion, arts and architecture, leisure and government. We will discuss how life in Ancient Greece has influenced the modern day world. We shall explore where Greece is in the world and reasons why so many people choose to go there on holiday. We will undertake research about Greece’s climate and tourist attractions. Art/DT In DT children will make a Trojan Horse on launch day and progress to designing and building a maze. In Art the children will produce collaged book covers using a range of papers and techniques linked to Greek myths. Languages French work this term will focus on identifying shops on the High Street, finding your way around and Christmas traditions in France. Music Children will explore classic rock songs. They will be using a wide range of musical vocabulary to describe and appraise the music that they hear. P.E During the autumn term each class will do Real PE and Rugby. Wye will have gymnastics sessions in Autumn 1 followed by Evenlode in Autumn 2. All classes will have a couple of Forest School sessions this term. The Arts Environment Spiritual and moral Communities As artists we will: Plan, design and create a collaged book cover. We will consider audience and content. They will be displayed at our Art Exhibition As people concerned with our environment we will: Explore how the Ancient Greek influences are reflected in modern day architecture locally, nationally and internationally. In our spiritual and moral development we will: explore the Ancient Greek’s belief systems, including their gods and goddessses. We will also discuss ethics, with regard to the Elgin marbles. As members of a community we will: explore how rule and decision making is organised. We will reflect on the influence of Ancient Greece on modern day governments and democracy.
