2 What you will learn How to save someone’s life by performing CPR
How to recognise when someone’s breathing & heart has stopped (cardiac arrest) Teachers Notes: Explain to your students what they are going to learn is very easy. This helps relax your students helping them learn.

3 Introduction 2% of people survive cardiac arrest WITHOUT CPR before they get medical help 75% of people survive cardiac arrest if they have IMMEDIATE CPR before they get medical help Teachers Notes: Oxygen is essential for life. When the heart stops, it stops pumping oxygen around our body to the brain. 3-4 minutes lack of oxygen to the brain causes irreparable brain damage. CPR ensures a constant supply of oxygen to the brain, preventing brain damage

5 Are you ready to learn how to save a life?
Imagine the feeling of being part of a group of people who can sustain life by learning simple life saving skills Teachers Note: You can motivate people by what you say & how you say it. Our aim is to encourage our students to WANT to treat their casualty if they are ever in that situation. They could be saving the lives of their friends, family, neighbours.

6 Who needs CPR? Anyone who is: Unconscious & not breathing
Unconscious & not breathing normally Teachers Notes: Someone who is unconscious & not breathing as they normally would NEEDS CPR. Most people in cardiac arrest breath abnormally. Tell your students if they are not sure if someone is breathing, they must DO CPR. Not doing CPR can cause death!

7 What does CPR do? Rescue breaths put oxygen into the blood
CPR pushes blood containing the oxygen around the body to the organs & the brain helping prevent irreparable brain damage 3-4 minutes lack of oxygen to the brain causes irreparable brain damage! Teachers Notes: Ask your students if they think CPR restarts the heart? Most of your students will say yes! Tell them CPR does not restart the heart. CPR “sustains” life and helps prevent irreparable brain damage until the person receives medical help.

Is your casualty conscious? Check their AIRWAY is not blocked Check they are BREATHING Do COMPRESSIONS if not breathing OR Check & treat for CIRCULATION which means BLEEDING QUESTIONS FOR STUDENTS If a casualty is BLEEDING & has an AIRWAY problem. Which one should they treat first? A casualty will die from an AIRWAY problem before they die from a bleeding problem AIRWAY comes before BLEEDING on the priority list If one casualty is unconscious & not BREATHING, & one casualty is BLEEDING, which casualty should be treated first? The unconscious casualty. It is an AIRWAY problem & comes first on the list Now they know how to treat a casualty with multiple injuries & more than one casualty, even if they are on their own! Tell your students this is ALL they need to remember about first aid!

9 Danger Teachers Notes:
Check for dangers firstly to themselves & WEAR GLOVES if possible Check for dangers to the casualty Check for dangers to other people Tell them if they get injured as first aiders, they may not be able to help their casualty & can make the situation worse.

10 Response Teachers Notes:
An unconscious person is like being asleep, but their airway is not protected & you cant wake them up. Check to see if your casualty is unconscious by checking the following AVPU: ALERT Do they open their eyes when we approach them? VOICE Do they open their eyes when we start to talk to them? Shout in both ears (they may be deaf in one ear) PAIN Do they respond when we tap them on the shoulders? (this does not harm the casualty). UNRESPONSIVE If they are unresponsive to all the above? SHOUT FOR HELP!

11 Airway Teachers Notes:
Open the mouth & LOOK for any obstruction. If there is one, pick it out with their finger & thumb BEFORE tilting the head back. If there is fluid in the mouth, tilt the head to the side. DO NOT do tilt the head to the side if you THINK there is a neck injury.

12 Breathing Teachers Notes: Check breathing for 10 seconds
LOOK at the chest to see if it is moving LISTEN by putting your ear to their mouth to listen for breath sounds FEEL for their breath on your cheek & put your hand on the chest to feel if it is moving If they are breathing, do a head to toe check for injuries. Then put them in the Recovery Position. Call for an ambulance. Make sure your students know what number to call!

13 Compressions x30 Teachers Notes:
Place your hands on centre of the chest & compress 5-6cm (2-2.5”) Then give 30 chest compressions at a speed of Compressions per minute The beat to the music “Saturday Night Fever” is the right speed for CPR & helps students remember.

14 Breaths X 2 Teachers Notes:
Give 2 rescue breaths. Each breath they give should take no more than 1 second! Tell them they do not have to breath into the mouth if they do not want to. If so, they should continue with continuous chest compressions Anyone doing CPR should change with another person every 2 minutes if they can, as they will be tired & will not be able to perform efficiently. (Resuscitation council UK 2010 guidelines)

15 FAQ’s What if I do it wrong?
Any CPR will give someone a chance of survival Can I get sued? Only do what you have been trained to do. Our training methods are approved by the European Resuscitation Council & are used by medical professionals on a daily basis. Do I have to do “mouth to mouth” No. If you felt you did not want to blow into their mouth, do continuous chest compressions. Teachers Notes: Answering peoples questions helps remove their fear of doing first aid.

16 Test Your Knowledge Cover up the answers:
How many compressions & rescue breaths should you give an Adult? 30 compressions & 2 breaths How long do you do CPR before changing with someone else if available? 2 minutes because you will be tired & not do it properly 4. Should you perform CPR if you are not sure if the person is breathing? YES - you will cause more harm not doing CPR to someone who needs it! When can you stop CPR? When someone else takes over, or when medical help has arrived Teachers Notes: The quiz lets you the teacher & the student know: you have given them correct knowledge that they have understood the knowledge. It is important for you to correct anyone who may have misunderstood what you have said. Do this in a way that makes them feel confident. It is rewarding as a teacher to see what your students have learned & that you have given them the skills & confidence to save lives!

It is important to include all of our students equally in teaching & when we test their knowledge. Some people are disadvantaged & may not be able to read or write. They may prefer to use this picture quiz. People with poor vision may prefer a verbal quiz.

19 Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
CPR Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Check for DANGER first to yourself then your casualty & others Tap casualties shoulders & shout in both ears for a RESPONSE If no response shout for HELP Open AIRWAY look into the mouth for any obvious obstruction. & remove with your finger & thumb If they are not BREATHING or making noisy breaths START CPR & call an ambulance Give X 30 COMPRESSIONS Press down on the chest at a speed of beats per minute. 5-6cms (2-2.5 inches) Give 2 BREATHS Pinch their nose, tilt their head back & blow into their mouth making the chest rise. Each breath should take 1 second. After 2 minutes get someone to take over DON’T STOP until they get medical help CALL AN AMBULANCE Teachers Notes: This is a complete summary of the lesson Students can print it & use it as a poster or keep it in a pocket or bag. If you can’t do rescue breaths do continuous compressions
