4 Health and Safety - Hazardous substances
Hazard Symbols Chemicals which can be dangerous are labeled with hazard symbols. Match the hazard symbol to the correct definition. Toxic: These substances can cause death if swallowed or breathed in. Harmful/ Irritant: These chemicals can cause irritation or inflammation of the skin Dangerous to the environment: These substances cause either immediate or delayed harm to the environment Oxidizing: These substances provide oxygen, which allows other materials to burn more fiercely. Corrosive: These substances attack and destroy living tissues, including eyes and skin. Extremely flammable: These substances easily catch fire. Health and Safety Extension: Describe a control measure you take to reduce the risk of harm from dangerous substances. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5 Health and Safety in the Workshop
To be safe in the workshop, you will need to concentrate as you are working and be aware of the possible dangers (hazards). You should know which steps to take to keep yourself and others safe. (precautions). PPE- Personal Protective Equipment Depending on the tools you are using and the material you are working with, you will need to wear some of the PPE shown below. Complete the notes below: PPE:__________________________ Hazard: _______________________ Example use: ___________________ ____________________________________________________________ PPE:__________________________ Hazard: ______________________ Example use: __________________ __________________________________________________________ PPE:__________________________ Hazard: _______________________ Example use: __________________ __________________________________________________________ PPE:__________________________ Hazard: _______________________ Example use: ___________________ ____________________________________________________________ Health and Safety PPE:__________________________ Hazard: ______________________ __________________________________________________________ PPE:__________________________ Hazard: _______________________ Example use: ___________________ ____________________________________________________________

6 Machine Tools Machine Tools Hazard Precaution 1 2 3
Ensure that you are confident, prepared and have taken your safety precautions when using the machine tools in the workshop. Scroll Saw/ Hengna Saw Used to cut intricate curves. Blade similar to a coping saw. Different blades are available for a selection of different materials and tasks. Risk Assessment for the Scroll Saw/ Hegna Saw Identify and write down two more hazards when using a pillar drill and precautions you should take. . Hazard Precaution 1 Long hair or loose clothing could get caught in the blade. Tie back long hair and tuck in or cover loose clothing 2 3 Machine Tools

7 Risk Assessment for the Pillar Drill Hazard Precaution 1
Used to drill holes in metals woods and plastics Machine parts Ensure you know what each part of the machine does. Label them using the words below Guard Table/ Bed On/off buttons Drill bit Lever Chuck Machine Clamp Used to keep work secure when drilling Risk Assessment for the Pillar Drill Identify and write down three hazards when using a pillar drill and precautions you should take. . Hazard Precaution 1 2 3 Machine Tools

8 Hazard Precaution 1 2 Machine Tools Quality Control Belt Sander
Used to shape and smooth the edges of wood and plastic. Risk Assessment for the Belt Sander Hazard Precaution 1 2 Machine Tools Quality Control A good quality product will: Meet the needs of the user Be capable of being maintained in good condition Have quality checks made at the appropriate time. Be made carefully and accurately. Some ways you can control the quality of your work during manufacture Numbering the components Colouring in the waste Cutting a clean angle Positioning your work in the vice Allowing for error (allowing an extra one mm for finger joint) Suggest one way that you could check the quality of your work. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .
