Properties of Water – Day 1
Kline Biology
2
Hydrogen Bond An attraction between a positively charged hydrogen atom and another negatively charged atom
3
Water resists sudden changes in temperature
usD-tyM What would happen if our cells were full of air? What benefit is there to living things being made up mostly of water? How would high heat capacity affect organisms living in an aquatic environment like a lake or pond? High Specific Heat Water resists sudden changes in temperature
4
High Specific Heat and H Bonding
What does high specific heat have to do with hydrogen bonding? It takes a lot of energy to break a hydrogen bond Heat is a source of energy, therefore it takes a lot of “heat energy” to break the hydrogen bonds between water molecules This is why it takes water so much time to change temperature.
5
Cohesion The attraction of water molecules to each other
Hydrogen bonds between water molecules are strong.
6
Pull out the water molecules
How are the magnets in the water molecules like hydrogen bonds?
7
Surface Tension Cohesion is responsible for surface tension. If an object has enough surface area, it can float on water. If metal sinks, why is it that a paper clip can float on the surface of water? How would surface tension be applicable to a living thing, like a spider?
8
The Jesus Lizard!!! How does this guy “walk on water?”

9
Just how strong are hydrogen bonds?
Cohesive properties cause water to “bead up” Hydrogen bonds between the water molecules cause them to be attracted to each other How many drops of water do you think will fit on the head of a penny?
10
Adhesion The attraction among molecules of different substances.
11
How does adhesion help plants transport water from its roots to the tips of its leave and branches?
Capillary Action - is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity.
12
Adhesion is also responsible for the meniscus in a test tube.
Meniscus - the curved upper surface of a liquid in a tube.

Properties of Water – Wrap up
Get out a ½ sheet of paper. Save a tree, share with a neighbor! AGWky98c List 10 things that you now know about water as you watch this wrap up video!!!!
