1 Ambient Air Monitoring

2 Analyze IT Ambient Air Monitoring - The Necessity
Hazardous Chemical plants increasing Plants and residential areas closely located Awareness on pollutants is increasing Environmental agencies imposing regulations and fines Safety of plant personnel

3 Ambient Air Monitoring - The Challenges
Multiple areas and locations need to be measured. Individual analyzers in each location is a very expensive idea Many possible interfering components. Gas detectors are not a solution as they are not specific to the toxic component that needs to be measured Ability to detect ppm / ppb trace levels Fast Analysis time with frequent updates Ability to handle enormous amount of data and report the same in useful formats recommended by the environmental agency Ability to transport representative samples at ppm levels over a long distance Reliable measurements - as this is directly related to the safety of the personnel

4 Ambient Air Monitoring - Technologies
Online Gas Chromatographs Reasonable costs Multi stream capability (32 streams) Ability to separate interfering components from measured toxic component Trace HC measurement using Flame Ionization Detectors Fast analysis times using simultaneous dual detectors (32 str in 16 min - VCM) Ability for connection to PCs and DCS for data handling / reporting Engineered sample systems for obtaining representative samples Reliable hardware / software Extensive vendor support

5 Ease of Use and Flexibility
VN2300 connections Analog and Digital Inputs and Outputs Serial Printer connection Built in LCD and Keypad Interface Easy to use Plain Language Menus Chromatogram viewing and storage

16 Data Analysis / Reporting Details
Critical portion of the Ambient Air Monitoring is gathering, storage, analysis and presentation of the GC data A combination of standard software and hardware products available from ABB can be integrated in to a customized comprehensive, PC based data system Data is collected and analyzed by the customized software allowing presentation and storage of important information such as Time Weighted Averages of measured components, personnel exposure levels and alarm set-point excursions

18 OPC Awareness Built-In
OLE for Process Control Fundamental Building Block VistaNET2.0 Gateway uses OPC Server Technology Communications Clients MODBUS Serial Links 20V4 20V7 MOD V SAP

19 What is OPC? A Standard Set of
Interfaces Properties Methods That defines how individual software components can interact and share data.

20 HOW OPC works? Each vendor creates software that “speaks” to their own equipment, using the “native tongue”. This software module also speaks OPC. Load software from two or more vendors… And they can “talk” to each other!

21 OPC does Allows OPC “aware” applications to exchange data.
Allows various vendors to participate. Provides information in its native format and syntax Provides a browser to facilitate configuration.

22 OPC Doesn’t Generate hard copies Generate screens Draw pictures
Require intermediate mapping Like MODBUS

23 Data Analysis / Reporting Details - Software
HMI (Human/Machine Interface) is the computer system. Printer available for reports 3 OPC servers are installed in the computer VistaNET OPC server interfaces the GC data with the HMI program for the reports. ODBC OPC server interfaces the HMI program with the Microsoft Accesss. Data generated via HMI program is stored in various data base tables. ABB 800 C OPC server interfaces HMI program with the ABB 800 C PLC. Thus the HMI program will control the relay outputs of the 800 C PLC. Visual BASIC programs generate the 12 hr & monthly reports - current & historical / raw data file / calibration data etc.

24 Data Analysis / Reporting - Main Screen

25 Data Analysis / Reporting details
Main screen - Each Stream Result, 12 hr TWA, Max concn, Time of Max, Number of times the alarm limit has been exceeded - in the current 12 hr period Alarms displayed in the bottom of the main screen HMI gathers the 12 hr data and stores it in to a temp. data base file - which is used to generate the 12 hr report. A similar routine is done for monthly report. Every 15 minutes all of the raw data is stored in the Raw Database Automatic calibration / benchmark can be done on a predetermined frequency. HMI program will store the calibration / benchmark data.

26 Ambient Air Monitoring - Other Technologies
Industrial Mass Spectrometer More expensive No significant advantage in analysis times - as the GC with Simultaneous Dual Detectors offer 30 secs per stream
