Pre-, Pro-, and Post-

2 Definitions and Usage:
Pre-: before in time, place, order, or importance If you have a pre-existing condition, the insurance company will not allow you to become a member. Pro-: favoring; in support of; acting for; motion forward or away; before in time, place, or order Should I make some introductory remarks before telling my story, or do you think a prologue is unnecessary? Post-: after in time or order Mary graduated from The University of Akron in 2005 and returned for postgraduate studies in 2006.

3 Match the prefixes with the word endings that make sense.

4 Extension Activity: Understanding Word Parts and Navigating a Dictionary
Use a dictionary to add one more word for each prefix to your list. Include each word’s definition and explain where you see the prefix’s meaning in their definitions.

5 Extension Activity: Context Clues
Choose three words (one for each prefix) and create three separate context clue sentences. Underline the word you use and context clues you include in each sentence.

6 Extension Activity: Making Meanings with Connotation
Sketch out a colored image for one of the following words; consider the connotation and context of the word as you create your image. The word’s definition should be present somewhere within your drawing. Prepare Procure Posthumous
