1 Bell Questions List and explain 4 characteristics of a living organism. Is bacteria living, why or why not? Give 3 observations and 1 inference for this picture:

2 Fire Drill What do you do?

3 Complete 1-3 Reading We will complete this TOGETHER.
Send 1 person from each of your tables to get a textbook. Pgs

4 What is biology? Greek word Bios = life Logy = study of
Organisms are complex and vary – biologists work can vary greatly

5 Made up of cells Cell Unicellular Multicellular
Small, self contained units Smallest units of an organism that can be considered alive Unicellular Multicellular

6 Reproduction Sexual reproduction Asexual reproduction
2 cells from different parents unit to produce the 1st cell of organism Asexual reproduction Single celled organism divides in half A portion of an organism splits off to form a new organisms

7 Based on a Genetic Code Offspring always resemble parents
Asexual – offspring and parents have same traits Sexual – offspring differ in some ways Flies always produce flies, dogs always produce dogs, etc Deoxyribonucleic acid

8 Growth & Development Each organism has a distinctive life cycle
Some microorganisms – main change is growth Development Eggs -> maggots -> flies Cells increase in number & differentiate

9 Need for Materials & Energy
Survival & growth Metabolism = combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials in life processes Plants, algae, and some bacteria Photosynthesis – sun energy Most other organisms Rely on energy stored during photosynthesis Consume those organisms Decomposers Obtain energy from remains of organisms that have died

10 Response to the Environment
Organisms live in constantly changing environments Light, temperature, etc. Each organism responds to these changes in its own way

11 Maintaining Internal Balance
Changes in an organism are complex. Homeostasis – the process by which organisms keep their internal conditions relatively stable. If homeostasis is disrupted in a major way, the organism cannot survive.

12 Evolution Evolve Change over time
Over a few generations – changes don’t seem significant and are typically very small. Over hundreds of thousands of years, changes can be dramatic

13 Branches of Biology Zoologists Zoo = animal Botanists
Botanikos = plants Ethologists Ethos = custom Paleontologists Paleo = ancient

14

15 What are ALL 8 characteristics of living organisms?
Made of cells Reproduce Universal genetic code Grow and develop Obtain and use materials and energy Respond to their environment Maintain stable internal environment Change over time

16 Pg. 30 – Due beginning of next class
Define vocabulary for 1-3 Answer questions 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 21, 22 You do not need to write out full question. Answer questions as full sentences. It should be short answer. You should be able to read questions later and understand. 8 characteristics of living organisms

17 Pillbug Lab We need pillbugs!
You should collect them in some type of plastic container. Poke holes on top and place vegetation inside. We will begin this lab September 5, 2017

18 Recap What are the 8 characteristics of living things?
What is homeostasis?
