STORY OF KALBELIYAS KALBELIYAS USED TO MOVE FROM VILLAGE TO VILLAGE CARRYING THE SNAKES IN BAMBOO BASKETS. PEOPLE WOULD GATHER AROUND THEM TO WATCH THE SHOW AND ALSO TO GET THE MEDICINES, WHICH ARE MADE FROM PLANTS. PEOPLE GIVE IN RETURN MONEY OR FOODGRAINS TO THE SNAKE CHARMERS.

snake-squad…. Kalbeliyas made a living out of an average man's fear of snakes and reptiles. They were the 'snake-squad', ridding your home and farms of pests.

Their history….. The lowest level in the Hindu caste system, they live without permanent homes and are seen as squatters and hustlers , Moving from place to place, sleeping beneath the stars on the outskirts of towns, the Kalbeliya share the bad reputation of gypsies the world over. Once much sought after by kings and maharajas, they were hired to provide exotic the Kalbeliya are dancers and snake charmers ….

they live in the Thar desert coming to the cities to make some money by showing their talents. These music and dances, we can understand them only if we get to know at least a bit the life of this people. The important thing is to know their: environment, context, style, energy…..
