1 Installations, modifications, consolidation in 2005:
What is planned and can we do it ? Louis Rinolfi CERN - PS&SPS Days - 13th January 2005

2 Layout of PS & SPS complex

3 Open questions presented at ATC
ATC - 11h March 2004 1) When beams (p+, Pb ions, e-) should be available in 2006 ? Present scenario is beginning of April 2006. 2) Access control not available in winter 2005/2006 for ions commissioning period ? 3) Bottleneck in PS main coil supply --> first PS magnet will be removed in February > according to which procedure ? 4) What about the SPS control room at the start-up in February 2006 if the new CCC is not ready ? --> consequences on the hardware tests ? 5) What is the available support from other departments (mainly AT, TS and SC/RP) ? Can we plan all shut-down works as presented today ? Otherwise what are the priorities ?

4 Answers today  1) When beams (p+, Pb ions, e-) should be available in 2006 ? Present scenario is beginning of April ==> ??? 2) Access control not available in winter 2005/2006 for ions commissioning period ? ==> Solution consist to consider LEIR ring as a secondary beam zone. 3) Bottleneck in PS main coil supply --> first PS magnet will be removed in February > according to which procedure ? ==> Magnet evaluation for 100 magnets finished 18th December 2004. ==> Order of removal for the weakest 40 magnets still under discussion. 4) What about the SPS control room at the start-up in February 2006 if the new CCC is not ready ? --> consequences on the hardware tests ? ==> ??? 5) What is the available support from other departments (mainly AT, TS and SC/RP) ? ??? Can we plan all shut-down works as presented today ? ==> ??? Otherwise what are the priorities ? ==> LHC,LHC,.... but the PS&SPS injectors complex should be operational in 2006 !

5 Inputs for shut-down activities in 2005
Planning available for operational machines Planning available for CERN and AB projects Information available from the AB Consolidation project Previous documents written about consolidation and proposed installations Reviews made in the ABIC Several beams should be in use in (Not all machines are shut-down) No considerations on budget and manpower (Only technical matters)

6 What is planned in 2005 ? Only major items Linac 2: Routine shut-down
Linac3: Installation of the new ion source PSB: Routine shut-down PS: 40 main magnets renovated and 100 magnets realigned with zero offset AD: Upgrade of the e-cooling system (=> but no resources clearly defined) Transfer lines: TT2: Installation of new quadrupoles for ions beams. SPS: LSS6 + TCC6 activities for TI 2 line (Old target, irradiated cables, 4 kickers, ...) Replace TDC2 irradiated + PVC cables Quadrupole jacks upgrade Compensator consolidation 18 kV cables replacement (Last news from TS/EL "not foreseen")

7 What is planned in 2005 ? Jan 05 Jan 06

8 "Interferences" with projects
LHC CNGS SLI LTI I-LHC CTF3 Linac4 All these projects require work from AT/VAC, AT/MEL, TS, SC/RP. Very often it is the same people dealing with several projects and several machines Same remark for all AB technical groups (ATB, BDI, BT, CO, PO, RF) Some illustrations: Lack of SC/RP technicians for SPS ==> Delays of installations in TCC6 (for TI2) From mid-2005, almost all AT/VAC people will be on LHC ==> Consequences ??? No available bellows ==> Crisis for LEIR installation in AT/VAC and TS/MME Same AT/MEL people work on PS magnets, LEIR, CTF3 magnets ==> ???

9 What could delay the start-up in 2006 ?
General 1) Management policy: diversion of resources, late changes to 2006 schedule, etc. 2) Contractual uncertainties: suppliers or subcontractors going bust or strike. 3) Delivery times: given the heaviness of CERN purchasing procedures. 4) Delays in CCC availability (a non-reversible activity which has begun).

10 What could delay the start-up in 2006 ?
Specific to the PS complex 1. Material damage due to accidents during the PS revision programme. 2. No modernization of the PS tunnel air conditioning equipment. Breakdowns or flooding (seen by the DG during his visit at the PS). 3. High Voltage breakdowns of the remaining unrevised magnets during the end of shutdown. Specific to the SPS complex 1. Nothing that is predictable (if an activity can't be finished it won't be started: example of TDC2 irradiated + PVC cables foreseen in September 2005). 2) Insufficient H/W tests time.

11 Why 12 weeks of hardware tests in 2006 ?
1) Because AB-PO alone require 10 weeks after a normal shutdown. Their power tests are usually carried out with tunnel OPEN. However we request to do the same tests with tunnel closed (preclosure) to allow other tests in parallel (ex. Machine interlocks, Magnet polarities, etc.) 2) Because we will have a BRAND NEW CCC. 3) Because all the equipment, including general services (CV + EL) will not have functioned normally for over a year. 4) Because we need some contingency. 5) Because of the psychological effect; work will ALWAYS continue until just BEYOND the closing date. 6) Because experience suggests (ex. TI8 H/W test period was 10 weeks + 2 weeks cold check-out).

12 Proposals The PS&SPS documentation is in poor state.
==> Take this year to update the layouts and drawings. ==> More manpower from TS/MME and more money. The SPS H/W tests period does not cover the tests of the SPS main magnets/converters which can only be carried out from EDF supply. Under the present contract is beyond the first of April. ==> Change the EDF contract in order to start these tests in March 2006. ==> More teams to work in parallel.

13 Conclusion 1) No major show stopper for the long 2005 shut-down
"We can do it !" 2) End of shut-down installations in the PS and SPS complex: ==> 21st December 2005 3) The 3 months of hardware tests for PS are foreseen mainly for the renovated magnets and cold check out. The 3 months of hardware tests for SPS do not include cold check out. AB-OP requests a further month: ==> No beam possible before the first of April 2006 in PS ==> No beam possible before the first of May 2006 in SPS
