Level 1 / 2 Engineering Moderation Key Issues
2
Moderation Key Issues Points arising from this years series.
During this year’s moderation of the samples for both Unit 1 and Unit 2, there were some excellent examples of work seen across all assessment criteria. This is a good indication that Centres are now becoming more familiar with the way in which the tasks are set, completed and assessed

Moderation Key Issues Points arising from this years series. The following information is considered areas for centres to address to improve overall administration and delivery of the course.

Understanding the overall assessment criteria Centres should be reminded that for a candidate to achieve a given achievement grade (for example, a Merit grade), the candidate cannot fall below a Merit in any of the individual Assessment Criteria’s (AC’s). If this is to happen then the candidate would fall down to the level of the lowest AC awarded across the unit. Where multiple staff are involved in delivery, it is vital that centres standardize their grades before submitting

Ensure that the timeframes for each unit are followed A small number of centres exceeded this purely by the volume of work evident for a 7 hour unit. Please ensure you manage the time according to the level of control. Moderators will be instructed for next year to stop marking when they feel the time frame has been reached

Ensure briefs are appropriate and fit for purpose In a small number of Centres, briefs were issued to candidates that were in breach of the levels of control for controlled assessment taking, these briefs tended to disadvantage candidates in not allowing them to be able to access the full range of AC’s within the unit. If unsure, briefs to the subject officer who will check to see if the brief is appropriate to issue

Preparation for moderation Centres need to ensure they follow instructions for moderation clearly. All submitted work should be packaged separately, with regards to unit 1 and unit 2, even if a candidate is selected for both in the moderation sample. Individual moderators usually focus on one unit only. Ensure the sample is sent to the correct moderator, pack only separate units in one sample.

Ensure candidates design and use their own presentation frames etc.
Points arising from this years series. Writing Frames Writing frames given by centres to help candidates complete pages constitutes support and guidance outside of the set levels of control. This will therefore reduce the band awarded when compared to a candidate who has worked without support, guidance or a writing frame. Centres should be reminded that candidates are expected to individually decide on the method of presentation for their outcomes. Ensure candidates design and use their own presentation frames etc.

Administrative issues Ensure assessment grids are filled correctly each with an assessment outcome. I.e. Level 1 Pass, Level 2 Pass etc. Please ensure an overall assessment is also given. Ensure covers clearly show: Centre Number, Candidate Name, Candidate Number, Unit of Work (Unit 1 or Unit 2) Ensure assessment grids include justifications for why the assessment criteria was awarded. Errors in these areas will require the moderator to request the entire cohort for sample
