Most demographic groups had a NIH RO1 success rate of 25. 4-29. 3%
Most demographic groups had a NIH RO1 success rate of %. African Americans had only 16.1% over the same timeframe.(Ginther et al.,2011)

LARGEST NIH MENTORING PROGRAM, DEFINES BEST PRACTICES, TRAINS MENTORS. OUTCOMES ARE NOT AVAILABLE.
7
NIDA DIVERSITY SCHOLARS NETWORK, TWO YEARS, SHORT TERM FACE-TO FACE SESSIONS, REMOTE MENTORING (NDSN)
8
SUMMER PROGRAM IN NEUROSCIENCE, EXCELLENCE AND SUCCESS (SPINES)
DATA ARE FROM INTERNAL EVALUATIONS FOR SPINES COLLECTED BY THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION AND THE MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY
9
END OF COURSE EVALUATIONS ON THE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF SPINES (2008-2013)
10
AVERAGE TIME TO DOCTORAL DEGREE WAS 6
AVERAGE TIME TO DOCTORAL DEGREE WAS 6.0 YEARS WHILE DEGREE RECIPIENTS IN BIOLOGICAL FIELDS TOOK 8.2 YEARS ( )
11
SPINES STUDENTS PUBLISH IN HIGHER IMPACT JOURNALS THAN NON-SPINES STUDENTS (P<.05)(1988-2004)
12
SPINES STUDENTS AND MENTORS REMAIN IN CONTACT (1988-2004)
13
WHO ARE SPINES FACULTY AND MENTORS?
14
What are the NIAAA specific data on training URMs
What are the NIAAA specific data on training URMs? The NIAAA data were abstracted from from internal reports
15
NIAAA URM REPRESENTATION IN T-TRAINING GRANTS VARIED BETWEEN 9.1-20.I%
16
Niaaa pre- and postdoctoral funding VARIED BETWEEN 9-12.1% FOR urms
17
6.1-10.1% of total k-Minority k-awards Vary between 6.1-10.1% FOR URMS
18
Recommendations to NIAAA for developing a Mentoring program
19
Create a transitional mentoring program at one or more alcohol centers ALL NIAAA FELLOWS OR YOUNG ASSISTANT PROFESSORS WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY REGARDLESS OF ETHNICITY OR RACE
20
It is recommended that the Program be residential and last 3 to 4 weeks THIS IS PERHAPS THE ONLY WAY TO FORM A LIFE-LONG BOND BETWEEN MENTORS AND MENTEES
21
The first and most important skill to be learned is grant writing
The first and most important skill to be learned is grant writing. The goal should be the submission of a NIH grant.
22
The Program should last two years to allow evaluation of the IRG critiques and possibly a resubmission
23
The second year could also focus on journal writing, including a submission to a scientific peer-reviewed journal
24
Incorporate science LECTURE CLASSES and LEARNING techniques particularly as they relate to alcohol research
25
SCHEDULE informal social/science time with the mentor faculty to foster a mentor-mentee connection
26
Possible mechanisms to support transitional mentoring
Supplement existing alcohol Centers. This will allow the Transitional Mentoring Programs to be rapidly created Supplement Centers following a competition Create a R25 for an open competition Create a Special Emphasis Panel for review if there is an open R25 competition
