THE TOUCAN By: Jessica O’Donohue & Aine Connole.
2
Description The Toucan is a tropical bird.
It has an oversized colourful beak. Toucans are intelligent birds. A toucan's bill is sharp and has saw-like edge.
3
Diet The toucan diet largely consists of fruit.
They also eat bug’s, insects and small lizards. They also plunder nests of smaller birds, taking eggs and nestlings.
4
Habitat Toucans are native to Southern Mexico, Central America, the northern portion of South America, and the Caribbean region. They generally live in tropical and sub-tropical regions.
5
Reproduction The larger species don’t breed until they are 3 or 4 years old. Males often court females by feeding them berries. A toucan mating ritual involves picking and throwing food to each other with their beaks.
6
Behaviour Toucans are gregarious.
They flock together in large groups that can be downright noisy. They enjoy playing games, like beak wrestling.
