CAPTURES the whole ARGUMENT in ONE sentence, usually near the end of the INTRODUCTION.

Argument: takes the topic further by taking a stand on something related to the topic and giving reasons for the stance taken
Both must be clear in your thesis statement as well as clear in your paper!

Be contestable, proposing an arguable point with which people could disagree
NOT be a statement of fact or express the obvious.
Be thought provoking, take a stand, and justify the discussion that will be presented
Tackle a subject that could be adequately justified by sources

8. Be specific, focused, and prove a point.
Clearly assert a conclusion based on evidence.
Provide the reader with a map to guide him/her through the work

9. Avoid vague (unclear) language.
Avoid the first person. For example: “I believe”, “in my opinion”, “we need to”, “us”, etc.

10. REMEMBER: A well-written thesis statement should go beyond stating the obvious and lead readers of your paper to discover what you want them to know about your topic.
