2 Chapter 1 …? Mild, decent character
Quickly adapts to island life & delighted by it Rejoices at the absence of adults Athletic / good swimmer Doesn’t offer Piggy friendship Good family background Ralph has total confidence in his father First reaction to the conch is childish amusement Reveals Piggy’s nickname but regrets it when he sees Piggy is upset Exuberantly leads exploration of the island Popular

3 Chapter 12 …? Isolated hunted animal-like Outcast Disillusioned
Attitude to Piggy changes – no longer considers him a ‘bore’ but appreciates his wisdom and intellect – ‘true, wise friend’ Rolls over on the beach in fear (at the start he did cartwheels for joy)

4 Intentions always good and took his leadership seriously
Had the right priorities (shelter, rescue) Saw that work should come before fun Manages assemblies well sometimes (Ch 4) So, why does he change? Why does it all go wrong?

5 He can’t exert enough authority over the other boys when Jack offers fun and meat
His plans sometimes go wrong (Ch 5) He sometimes loses his grip on the situation and finds thinking quickly difficult He loses confidence in his ability He doesn’t understand the ‘evil’ side of human nature
