The topic is the general idea. The controlling statement is the specific main point about the topic you are writing about Supporting details give specific details about your controlling point

Look at the sentences below . Identify which sentences would be a Topic Sentence , Controlling point and Supporting Details Some amusement rides, like roller coasters, can be frightening. Looking at a rollercoaster from the ground can make you think it is fun. However, once you are in the air, it can get scary. The coaster goes higher and higher. You might get very fast speeds with twists , turns, and even loops. Some coasters even give you the feeling you are falling out. The Corkscrew in Cedar Point is one of these roller coasters.

Body Paragraphs You should take the Controlling points and supporting details and be more specific with the examples. Here is an example from the amusement park. When it was constructed in 1976, the Corkscrew was the first ride with a 360-degree vertical loop and two helical curves. Riders turn upside-down three times, crossing over the midway while guests watch directly underneath. It reaches speeds of 55 mph. There are 15 different twists and turns.It was named scariest rollercoaster by RC magazine in 1980.

Your Turn If the topic was Amusements Parks, and the Controlling point was Everyone has fun at an amusement park, which of these would be good supporting details. Grandparents enjoy watching their grandkids have fun. Little kids get scared at scary rides Children get to ride exciting rides, play fun games, and eat great food. People who just ate a lot shouldn’t ride fast rides Parents can act like little kids again Performers love to see everyone laugh and enjoy their shows

Concluding Paragraphs
Your concluding paragraph should finish your paper to focus the reader on the points you were trying make. It should remind the reader of the main points of your essay Do not bring up new points that you didn’t include in your introduction or body paragraphs. You can restate your main points, but put it in different words.
