- The Transfer of Heat Identifying Main Ideas Main Idea Heat can be transferred in three ways. Detail Detail Detail Conduction– transfer of heat between particles without the movement of matter. Heat is transferred when 2 objects are touching. Convection– transfer of heat by the movement of currents in a fluid (liquid or gas) Radiation– transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves (the sun, a fire, a lightbulb)

3 An insulator is a material that does NOT transfer energy (heat) well.
- The Transfer of Heat Insulators An insulator is a material that does NOT transfer energy (heat) well. Air between the panes of this window acts as an insulator to slow the transfer of heat. Examples: carpet, rug, wood, paper, air

4 Conductors A conductor transfers energy (heat) well. Metals are good conductors of heat. Examples: silver, stainless steel, copper, tile

Important Facts Heat is transferred by conduction, convection, or radiation. Heat from a fireplace is transferred by all three ways: conduction, convection, AND radiation. Can you think how????

7 Important Facts If objects have different temperatures, heat will flow from the WARMER object to the COLDER object. If a fluid (liquid/gas) is warm, the particles (atoms) are less dense and expand. If a fluid (liquid/gas) is cold, the particles (atoms) are more dense and are packed tighter together.
