Justify your answer by close reference to lines U How many marks would you award this answer, and why? For Analysis: Word Choice questions, make your explanation specific to the word you have chosen to analyse. For Understanding: Own Words questions, you should translate one piece of information for every mark the question is worth. For any Analysis question you are set, make sure that your analysis answers the question you have been asked. Don’t worry about the last question – we’ll deal with this later in the year.

Close Reading – Things to Focus On
These are the key issues that the “Saladin Days” passage raised: Manage your time carefully, to make sure you attempt every question. Answer every question – don’t leave gaps. Analysis Questions: Analyse 1 technique for every mark the question is worth (e.g. 4 marks – analyse 4 techniques). “Own Words” Questions: Check your answers to ensure that: you haven’t used any words from the passage. you haven’t changed the meaning of the information from the passage when you translate it.
