Background Info There are two types of whales, toothed and baleen. There are about seventy-one different species of toothed whales. They include dolphins, belugas and others. The shape, arrangement, and number of teeth vary from specie to scecie. Toothed whales also only have one blowhole while baleen whales have two. Another feature these whales have are melons. A melon is a fluid filled structure on the whales forehead.

Continued Toothed whales also have a single set of teeth. They'd will go their entire lives with the same set of teeth. These whales also form pods, social groups, which can contain a few or thousands of whales in it. Scientist don't understand the social structure, however they can see complex interactions and communication.

Understanding Orca Culture
Author: Lisa Stiffler Date: August 2011 The Smithsonian Magazine Orcas have been shown to have cultural differences. The first evidence came from studies of vocalizations in whales from the waters of British Colombia and Washington state. Scientist studied four clans that live very close to one another however their vocalizations are very different. Scientists also saw that their diet was different. Resident orcas eat chinook and salmon while transient orcas eat seal and sea lions. While there are many whales in the world there are only ninty in the salish sea which leads to inbreeding.

Continued This article is very important because we can see how whales are close to humans. In the U.S. there are many people from different places living close to each other and still act differently. These whales even cross paths with each other and they still act differently. People think that they are the smartest in the world and that we are supreme, however we are not. There are many animals that are smarter than us.

Diet Toothed whales hunt for their food. Their diet includes fish, squid, crabs, starfish and other organisms living in the ocean. Toothed Whales eat their prey wholes while Baleen filter tiny prey from the water. Whales use echolocation in order to locate their food. Using its nasal passages, whales send out ultrasounds, signals, that can find organisms within the water. The echo is sent out and it bounces off the organism and is sent back to the whale. The echo is able to tell the whale the size, shape and location.

Average Life Span Beluga: 40 to 60 years Narwhal: 40 to 60 years
Blue: 70 to 90 years Bowhead: 100 to 200 years Fin: 60 to 100 years Gray: 50 to 100years Humpback: 40 to 100 years Minke: 30 to 50 years Sperm: 60 to 80 years

Breeding The first step to breeding is leaving their local feeding ground. They have to get ready for a long migration to their breeding ground. At this breeding ground males compete with each other in order to get a females to breed with them.

Behavior Toothed whales do things in groups. They hunt migrate and raise their young in groups. Toothed whales also communicate with each other. They make lyric sounds that are capable of traveling for miles. Whales, when they sleep, do not go unconscious. They need to be able to break the water in order to sleep.
