1 De Stijl and Abstract Expressionism
Styles of Piet Mondrian and Jackson Pollock

2 De Stijl Dutch for “the style”.
Emerged after WWI to represent a new, better world. Was dedicated to uniting people in a utopian (perfect) society. A movement that focused on straight lines, squares, rectangles, geometric shapes, and primary colors. Died out with the realization that a utopia was unattainable in the real world.

4 Piet Mondrian One of the founders of the De Stijl movement.
Worked from the late 1880’s to the early 1940’s. Purposely made his paintings basic and simple. Was also a theorist and writer. Used horizontal and vertical lines to represent positive and negative, male and female, good and evil – a balance.

Felt that art should be an expression of yourself and your emotions. Was one of the first radical American art movements, and helped America surpass Paris as the art hub during the time.

9 Jackson Pollock Worked from the 1930’s to the mid 1950’s.
One of the most well known abstract expressionists. Has a radical art style recognized around the world. Was considered one of the greatest painters in the United States in 1949. Began painting abstract expressionist pieces to fight his alcoholism.
