Aim: How do we solve equations with fractional or negative exponents?
Do Now: Simplify the following 1. 2. 3. 4. Solve for x: HW: p.305 # 4,6,8,10,12,14,18,20
2
We can use the ordinary method to isolate the variable with fractional or negative exponent from the rest, then solve for the variable. Divide both sides by 2 Simplify Multiply the reciprocal of the exponent on both sides Multiply the exponents
3
Solve for x: Divide both sides by 15 Simplify Multiply the reciprocal of the exponent on both sides Simplify Change the exponent to positive
4
Solve for x: Subtract 1 on both sides Multiply the reciprocal of the exponent on both sides Simplify
5
Solve for x: Change the radical to a power Multiply the reciprocal of the exponent Simplify Simplify
6
Solve for x: Move –1 to the right Divide both sides by 2
Raise both sides to the power that is the reciprocal of the exponent of the variable simplify
7
Solve for x:
8
