Lesson 1 -Introduction to Functions
To analyze functions by investigating domain, range intercepts and zeros To create and connect representations that are tabular, graphic, numeric and symbolic from a set of data
2
Definitions Relation – set of ordered pairs Domain – set of all x-values (inputs) Range – set of all y-values (outputs)
3
Definitions Function – relation where all inputs have one specific output function notation – f(x) “function f of x” Note: Different definitions on p. 243 in your Transitional Algebra Book
4
Examples Tell which relations are functions: 1. {(3, -2), (8, 1), (9,2), (3,3), (-4,0)} 2. {(6.5,0), (7,-1), (6,2), (2,6), (5,-1)}
5
Examples Domain: Range: -2 -1 7
6
Examples Domain: Range: -5 -3 1 11 12 -1
7
When given a graph of a relation, use the vertical line test
When given a graph of a relation, use the vertical line test! Vertical Line Test – if 2 points on the graph cross any vertical line, it is NOT a function Vertical Line Test
