An Introduction to the Principles and Applications of Electromagnetic Induction
2
Aims and Objectives To recall the founder of Electromagnetic Induction
To consider the theory behind Electromagnetic Induction To name two common applications of Electromagnetic Induction
3
Michael Faraday 29/08/1831 Faraday discovered 2 main things:
1) If a magnet was moved through a coil of wire, a voltage would be induced into the wire. This is Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction. Applications = electric motors and generators. 2) If 2 coils of wire are wound on a soft iron core, a voltage applied to one wire will induce a momentary voltage on the other. This is mutual induction. Applications = transformers.
4
How does it work? Mutual Induction
5
Applications of Electromagnetic Induction
Past: AC Electricity, Electricity Generation & Distribution Present: Home appliances, Computers, Cars, Industrial Control Systems, MRI Scanners Future: Induction charging, MAGLEV Train
