Primary A:35% B: 34% C:31% IF A & B face each other again in a primary = run off Know the term: Apathy First political parties: Federalists & Democrat-Republican Party systems: 1 party 2 party – US; Dems and Reps – HOW MUCH POWER SHOULD FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE????!!!!! Dems: A lot Reps: Not a lot Multiparty – coalition (come together) Party A, B, C, D, E = Party A, C, & E form a coalition for a majority Third parties: options, more choices, categories (pull votes from 2 main parties)

Party machines, patronage & spoils system: LOCAL – Party rules the city; corrupt; demand votes for living conditions (Tammany Hall); patronage is act of giving your vote in exchange for living conditions OR being appointed to office for support Caucus – nominate candidates & discuss the platform (2-3 hour ordeal) IOWA – Democrats = Hillary Republicans = Cruz At what LEVEL are political parties LEAST knowledgable about concerns of the people? FEDERAL Partisan – political parties ARE important; give an idea about positions; presidents; legislators NON-partisan – PP ARE NOT important; other issue citizens should vote by…. JUDGES! Interest Groups & PACs (Political Action Com) IG: Tries to persuade legislators (Senators/Representatives) to create laws/policies in support of their beliefs. NRA might talk with Senator Burr from NC to get more laws passed in Congress to support gun ownership. Hire lobbyists professionals who speak / influence legislators PAC: Influence outcome of elections. Sarah Palin wolves
