The Education System Developments in the history of Jamaican education can be seen as responses to events such as the: abolition of slavery 1834 the advent of suffrage in 1944 the achievement of independence in 1962 3

The Education System Much of the recent history of education in Jamaica has been driven by the perceived need to develop "homegrown" responses to economic, social, and political pressures on the island and in the Caribbean region (Whiteman 1994). 4

The Strategy will …………. Ensure that every programme offers a clear pathway into a postsecondary programme leading to a certificate, apprenticeship, associate or baccalaureate degree. Make high-quality Technical and Vocational pathway programmes widely available to both youth and career-changing adults through a variety of institutions and delivery models. Introduce the Core Service policy where each student has to do a Technical Subject. Strengthen national and regional workforce quality and economic competitiveness. 18
