Sentence Types

Remember that: A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. A sentence names someone or something and tells what that person or thing is or does.

There are four types of sentences:
Declarative Interrogative Imperative Exclamatory

Declarative This type of sentence makes a statement.
It ends with a period. . Example: Insects have six legs.

Interrogative This type of sentence asks a question.
It ends with a question mark. ? Example: What are you eating?

Imperative This type of sentence gives a command or makes a request.
It ends with a period. . Example: (You) Open the window. *Remember, in imperative sentences, the word you is understood as the subject.

Exclamatory These types of sentences express strong feeling or surprise. It ends with an exclamation point. ! Example: The grass is on fire! Hurry over here!

The end marks for sentences provide clues about what kind of sentence is being used, so USE them!!!!
EVERY sentence needs to begin with a capital letter!!!!!

Fragments A sentence fragment is a group of words that does not express a complete thought. Example: When she went to the store A fragment may also be missing the subject or verb Could not leave his mother A young farmer and his aged mother

Let’s practice! Read each group of words.
Write D for declarative, IN for interrogative, IM for imperative, E for exclamatory, or F for fragment before each sentence. Place the correct punctuation on the line at the end (period, question mark, exclamation point) or leave it blank if it is a fragment.
