Method of creating the illusion of depth, or recession, in a painting by modulating color to simulate changes affected by the atmosphere on the colors of things seen at a distance.
The objects that are far away appear more neutral in color and take on a bluish tone.
The value contrast between distant objects gradually lessens and contours become less distinct.
