ABOUT & INFLUENCE Italian- born French high fashion designer Born on July 2, 1922, became interested in fashion early. At 14 he embarked on a clothes- making apprenticeship Started off working for Paquin and then Schiaparelli. Later went on to work for Christian Dior as a tailor. Pierre Cardin started very young when he was just 14 and he began a clothes-making apprenticeship. He created costumes for film director Jean Cocteau and touched base with haute couture houses Schiaparelli and Christian Dior, where we worked on the game changing New Look collection in 1947. Not much later he set up on his own in Paris and originally specialized in costumes for the stage. Soon enough he built up a client base and Dior also sent his overflow clients to Cardin’s new business.

History at that point of time
Pierre was one of the first to look outside France for inspiration. He visited Japan in 1957 Fashion in the 1950’s during the World War II , was more driven by women while the men were away. Clothing was restricted throughout and even after the war, lengths of skirts to size of collars were regulated. Resulting in slim straight silhouettes. Christian Dior’s show “New Look” was the exact opposite of he 40’s style. And Pierre Cardin had a big hand in this big change. During the time Pierre Cardin was just coming into the high fashion industry, it was just after the World War II where there were regulations on lengths and collars, squared and boxy silhouettes. When Christian Dior had his “New Look” collection, it totally changed the style from the boxy straight designs to luxurious voluminous fabrics, soft shoulders and hourglass figures. Pierre Cardin did play a major role in this collection. Corsets, were also greatly used to get a tiny waist and bust and hip pads completed the hourglass figure.
