1
Warm-Up What is matter? 2 complete sentences (or more)
You can also write what is NOT matter!
2
Properties of Matter
3
What is a Property? Property – characteristic that enables us to distinguish one kind of matter from another
4
Physical Properties A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance Examples:
5
Extensive Properties Extensive – depends on the amount of matter present Examples: Mass, volume EXtra substance is need to increase EXtensive properties
6
Intensive Properties Intensive – does NOT depend on the amount of matter present Examples: Color, temperature, density, solubility
7
Chemical Properties A chemical property refers to the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances Examples: These properties cannot be observed without changing the substance!
8
New Vocabulary… Quantitative – a numerical description of a substance
Qualitative – a description of a substance that does NOT include a number
9
…And There’s More… Solubility – the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature and pressure Stability – the tendency of a material to resist change or decomposition
10
…Last Two! State/Phase of Matter – the physical forms in which all matter naturally exists on Earth Density – a ratio that compares the mass of an object to its volume Density of water = 1 g/mL
11
Physical Changes Physical Change – a change in a property of matter that does NOT result in a change in identity of the substance Examples:
12
Chemical Changes Chemical Change – a change in which the composition and properties of a substance change, altering the identity of the substance (also called a chemical reaction) Examples: Rust--- Iron + oxygen Iron oxide
13
Evidence Formation of a gas or precipitate Change in color
Change in temperature Change in odor
14
Law of Conservation of Mass
Mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction; it is conserved Antoine Lavoisier Example:
15
