ROMANIA

The European Context In the new European context, in which one of the European Union’s objectives is that all the citizens should speak fluently their mother tongue and another two foreign languages, starting from a very small age, we as English teachers have a very important role. Communicative language teaching (CLT) is an approach to the teaching of second and foreign languages that lays stress on interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of learning a language. Learners are encouraged to develop communicative competence, which is the ability to use language knowledge in a social context, in order to be able to interact.
3
As far as the class management is concerned, in this form of instruction, teachers often use group and pair interactions.
4
There are also different activities in CLT
Some of the activities are: role playing, interviews, games, surveys, comparing pictures, marketplace trading, problem solving, find common likes/dislikes etc.

The Romanian National Curriculum
In the Romanian National Curriculum, learning a foreign language is compulsory starting with the Preparatory school year (6-7 years old) and it continues until the University.
6
Amount of hours a week In the Primary School, from the Preparatory class to the Second grade, there is one hour per week, and from the third graders to the eighth graders (Elementary School) there are two hours per week. According to the Common European Framework, new competence- based subject syllabus for foreign languages has been designed for Romanian lower and upper secondary education. In the first three years of learning English as a first language, especially in the Preparatory class, there are no books provided by the Ministry of Education. Students learn by doing and by repeating. We use flashcards, realia, songs and videos for teaching English.
7
Starting with the First graders to the Second graders there are books but still no writing, just a little bit of reading, a lot of listening and speaking. Writing appears in the Third grade along with Grammar knowledge and, of course, reading, listening and speaking.
8
Textbooks There are plenty of textbooks to choose from but in our school we have chosen Fairyland series for our Primary students and Snapshot series for Elementary ones.
9
Materials The materials we use in the class are, as I said, flashcards, magazines, realia, songs, PPt Presentations, poems, riddles, tongue-twisters, videos For worksheets, either we create them or we use the internet and adapt them to our students. For songs we use Youtube.
10
Methods The method that I often use and the one that children are crazy about is the Total Physical Response (TPR method). It is more likely to be used in the Primary classes but not only. Another methods I use are the Silent Way and Suggestopaedia.
