Gravitational Fields
2
Gravitational Fields Fields are commonly called “spheres of influence”
Fields, like forces, are vector quantities and therefore have a direction – shown by field lines The more lines, the greater the field Gravitational fields are what cause gravitational force Since all masses have a gravitational force, all masses have a field
4
Calculating Gravitational Fields
There are two ways to calculate gravitational fields: Using a TEST OBJECT Using the object producing the greater field
5
Sample Problem Calculate the gravitational field strength on the surface of the Earth
6
Sample Problem On the surface of the Earth an object has a weight of 76.3 N and a mass of 7.78 kg. Using this information, what is the gravitational field strength on the surface of the Earth?
