NASA expects a 40% reduction in operating cost.

5 Electric Motor Test Stand Will Help With Future X-planes
June 28, 2016 Electric Motor Test Stand Will Help With Future X-planes Before the first electric propulsion X-planes fly, such as the X-57, researchers at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research in California are using a unique test stand to understand the intricacies of how electric motor systems work The first tests on Airvolt in late 2015 focused on the energy efficient Pipistrel Electro Taurus electric propulsion system, which is typically used for motor gliders, Lin explained. The Pipistrel motor is powered by lithium polymer batteries and produces 40 kilowatts of power, which are monitored by the Airvolt that is capable of accommodating systems that use up to 100 kilowatts of power. The test stand can also withstand 500 pounds of thrust. NASA is testing the Pipistrel Taurus electric propulsion system. (Note date of NASA press release…)

6 The Present Google co-founder's reported 'flying car' spotted hovering in Hollister Oct 22, Is Hollister's hovering aircraft Google co-founder's flying car? .... company with offices bordering the Hollister Municipal Airport tarmac.

7 Alpha Electro Trainer Second generation Electric-Powered Trainer – flying in Europe. The EAA, AOPA, and Pipistrel are working with the FAA on an exemption to allow training in electric-powered two-place aircraft.

8 Alpha Electro Trainer The Alpha Electro Trainer panel is just like the panel in Jim Pearsall’s gas Alpha trainer, except for the Propulsion Monitoring panel at the right. Alpha Electro – GA Trainer Presentation – AirVenture 2016 Tine Tomažič – Pipistrel R&D Director

Electric Aviation Made Practical The Problem We face a pilot shortage Flight training is expensive Fuel typ. Costs $40 to $55/hr. Aircraft rental - $100/hr. Instructor - $50/hr. Typ. $6K to $ 8K to get a PPSEL License Many potential pilots are priced out of a potential career A Solution Electric powered Trainers Electric ‘Fuel’ typ. Cost - $1.70/hr. Quiet Safe Reliable Higher first cost – Lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership)

13 The Future - July 2017? Compare with Horseless carriage FLYING taxis that will be able to drive themselves are set to be launched in Dubai later this year, the transport authority for the UAE city has confirmed. 16 Technologies with Multi-Modal Benefits
Advanced battery technology with higher energy density that will drive electric aviation, but also benefit ground transportation. Advanced battery management systems that will allow faster charging without battery damage. Super-conducting wiring that reduces weight and carries high amperage loads will make electric aircraft lighter and also trucks and buses. Advanced charging systems that can charge electric aircraft and also serve ground transportation at airports. This will include renewable energy combined with energy storage to reduce grid impacts and provide resilience. Advanced light weight, high efficiency solar panels that can fit vehicle contours. Advanced light weight, high power electric motors.

17 Pipistrel Alpha Electro Charging at New Prototype Public Charger

18 CALSTART’s Activities
Sustainable Aviation Project is designed establish the first flight training program using electric aircraft in the U.S. and help break down the regulatory barriers to electric propulsion with the FAA.   Project will help gain public acceptance for electric propulsion in aircraft.  Uncovering the challenges of setting up the charging infrastructure to support electric aircraft and integrate charging for aircraft, cars, buses and even trucks. Finally, looking for ways to expand the markets for companies that are designing new technology to support electric aircraft, but would also enhance other advanced electric vehicles, i.e. super-conductive wiring, advanced light weight electric motors, improved battery technology and management systems, etc.

19 Thanks! Electric Aircraft! For the opportunity to tell you about
This will not be a ‘sales pitch’. Numerous URL’s lead to additional information. Feedback promotes improvement. Joseph Oldham, Director CALSTART San Joaquin Valley Clean Transportation Center
