Why We Will Study We will hit on a lot of important aspects of these two major Ancient civilizations We will do so for three major reasons: 1. These were two of the most power civilizations for almost 1000 years 2. These influenced history and continue to influence to this day 3. Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome are TOTALLY RADICAL!!!

Today’s Class Today we are going to talk about two early civilizations that were extremely influential in shaping Ancient Greece The Minoans The Mycenaean Civilization

The Minoans The Minoans were NOT Greek, however their culture, art, and language had a tremendous impact on Ancient Greece Minoan Civilization developed during the Bronze Age around the year 2800 BCE and lasted until around 1450BCE

King Minos is said to have built a great labyrinth to keep the Minotaur at bay The Minotaur is said to be the son of Minos’ wife

The Palace at Knossos The center of Minoan civilization was the city of Knossos There was a massive palace built at Knossos The palace at Knossos was the center of Minoan Civilization

The Palace at Knossos The Palace at Knossos was built around the year 2000 BCE The palace was destroyed by a major earthquake and rebuilt around 1700 BCE The palace was also damaged and rebuilt due to a number of fires

The mountains of Crete forced the Minoans to grow orchard crops like grapes and olives

This was because of their closeness to Egypt, Asia Minor, and Mainland Greece

Mycenaean Greece also existed during the Bronze Age The name comes the city of Mycenae Mycenaean Civilization was thought to be purely mythical until the 1870’s An amateur archeologist Heinrich Schliemann was responsible for discovering tangible evidence of Mycenaean Civilization
