1 The Woman at the Well Chapter 2.7

2 Jesus And The Samaritan Woman

3 Context The people now wanted to make Jesus their political king. (not spiritual) Jesus left the area to escape them. Jesus ran from popularity; we tend to run toward it. (“He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30) Jesus headed for Galilee through Samaria.

4 The Place Story takes place in Sychar, a city in Samaria.
Samaria is sandwiched between Judea (south) and Galilee (north)

5 The People Omri, king of Israel, bought the city of Samaria from Shemer for 2 talents of silver (1 Kings 16:24). It was the capital of Israel for 200 years. In 722 BC, Sargon, king of Assyria, captured and destroyed the 10 tribes of Israel. He repopulated the area with pagan people with foreign gods and forced the Israelites to marry them.

6 Lessons from Samaria Going through Samaria was the shortest route from Galilee to Judea. Jesus knew there was a woman there who needed to be saved and given a new mission. Jesus used this to teach his disciples about racial prejudice and evangelism. What does this passage teach all believers about racial prejudice and evangelism?

7 Jesus: Fully MAN (His humanity)
Jesus was fully human. He was just like you and me, yet without sin. He grew weary. He ate and drank, worked and rested, cried and laughed. Just like us, he walked on two feet that got hot and tired. (v. 6) He looked just like everyone else. He wasn’t very tall or very attractive. He just looked like an ordinary Jew. So much so that the Samaritan woman addressed him like he was just another normal guy. (v. 9)

8 Jesus: Fully GOD (His deity)
He offered living water/eternal life. No mere human could do that. (v. 14) He was omniscient (he knew all things). He knew everything about the Samaritan woman’s past. (v.16-18) He claimed to be God. He used his authority as God to change and instruct how people were to worship. He changed it from mechanical and exclusive, to spiritual and universal. (v ) He was sustained by the Word and Will of his Father. (v.32)

9 Christ’s Heart Jesus was the most dedicated and devoted man that has and will ever live. He was determined to do the will of God no matter what it cost him (food, time, energy, comforts, a home in heaven, popularity, and even life itself). (v ) He was concerned for his disciples. He longed for them to have his same love and passion for the lost. And he wants us to have this same level of dedication and passion. (v.35-38) Are you determined to do the will of Christ?
