1
Newton’s First Law of Motion
If there is no net force acting on an object, it’s motion will not change
2
Sir Isaac Newton From staring at the sun, Newton developed a phobia of sunlight Newton developed Calculus in about the same amount of time it takes a student to study it today Newton was left-handed, like Bill Gates, Oprah, and Pres. Obama In 1720, Newton lost the equivalent of $3 million in stocks Newton’s book, “Principia Mathematica”, had a simple math error that nobody noticed for 300 years His last words were, “The great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”

This is Balanced Rock Park
Would you want to have your lunch is this picnic area? Why doesn’t the rock fall over? What might cause the rock to fall? There is a picnic area down here
4
Net Force There are 4 basic forces acting on this plane.
What would be the effect if : lift was greater than weight? drag was greater than thrust?
5
Inertia Think of most objects as being “lazy”. They want to keep doing exactly what they are already doing, and it requires some net force to make them change. If an object is sitting still, it takes a net force to make it move. If an object is moving, it requires a net force to change either its speed or its direction.

This dog wants frisbees that never stop. He’s disappointed.

Save the planet! Oh dear – there is a meteor headed for Earth.
What would you recommend we do about it?

On page 59, answer questions 6, 8, and 9.
Homework! Read the section on Newton's First law of motion, pages in text. On page 59, answer questions 6, 8, and 9.
