‘Long Term’ Causes of the American Revolution

The original 13 colonies Most were colonized in the 1600s
New England Colonies: Founded by Pilgrims and Puritains in order to settle down and start a new life. Middle Colonies: Founded by Cavaliers who were looking for monetary gain and to start businesses in the new world. Business was mainly set up for trade and textiles. Southern Colonies: Founded also by businessmen and militia. The business was more agrarian (tobacco and later cotton). Militia was to defend against the Spanish in Florida.

These colonies were one of two types
Proprietary: Given to one person to govern and rule in the name of a king – For example, Delaware was a proprietary colony given to Count De La Warr; Pennsylvania was given to Sir William Penn. Charter Colonies: Given to a business to operate as a charter for the royal crown (they paid via taxes) Massachusetts was founded through a charter by the Massachusetts Bay company; The London Company of Virginia was another By 1629 however, Parliament is changed and over the course of the next 50 years, ALL 12 (Georgia is a different case) colonies were ‘taken back’ by the King in what are known as Royal Colonies

One of the first treaties between colonists and Native Americans is signed as the Plymouth Pilgrims enact a peace pact with the Wampanoag Tribe. Twenty Africans are brought by a Dutch ship to Jamestown for sale as indentured servants, marking the beginning of slavery in Colonial America. November 9, the Mayflower lands at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with 101 colonists. The Mayflower Compact sets the precedent for other colonies as they set up governments.

In England, King Charles I dissolves parliament and attempts to rule as absolute monarch, spurring many to leave for the American colonies. In March, John Winthrop leads a Puritan migration of 900 colonists to Massachusetts Bay, where he will serve as the first governor. In September, Boston is officially established and serves as the site of Winthrop's government.
