Fall 2015 WHY: The Reason for School-Wide Results? These resources may help you undercover WHY you are getting the result you are seeing – positive, or not as positive. So, now that you have seen the Value-Added reports, you are ready to think about (no conclusions) identifying patterns and making observations to figuring out the WHY. Figuring out the “why” means that many variables have to be considered. The DD documents provide you with a list of reasons or variables that may be contributing to the results that you are seeing. Fall 2015 WHY: Digging Deeper into Content Areas Two Versions: Comprehensive and Consolidated Comprehensive version includes additional bullet points throughout: Consolidated version lists only the probes/questions, without the additional bullet points: There are 2 versions of the document – you have the consolidated version as hard-copy - to save a few trees. Posted online is the NON-consolidated version – this includes bulleted probes under each key question. The consolidated version can provide you with a “quicker” glance at the type of questions you can use in your probing and analysis. The comprehensive version provides you with bullets under many of the questions that help you go even more deeply into the specifics of that particular question. Disclaimer: This document was developed with feedback from individuals with expertise in the specific content area. HANDOUT: 3 Docs Content Specific Questions School Level Teacher Level Organized 2 ways: CIAO 4 Domains ELA: 3-5, 6-8, and Keystone Lit Math: 3-5, 6-8, and Keystone Alg I Science: 4, 8, and Keystone Bio When you look at the issues of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and organization, it is best to have some kind of framework to work from – rather than just guessing or asking questions about these areas in general or in a random fashion. These documents can help you put a structured process to the work that it takes to “dig deeply” to determine root cause(s). Fall 2015 Purpose: Digging Deeper into Content Areas Two Versions: Comprehensive and Consolidated Questions to spark reflection Not intended as a checklist Numbers within sections not intended to specify an order Does evidence exist? If no, practice may not be in place If yes, is it consistent and pervasive? What is the evidence? How to use this document: See the intro pages on each document - there is a set of “instructions” and guidance for use of the document. These are questions to spark reflection! These are not intended as a checklist! The numbers/codes within sections not intended to specify an order - rather to assist with navigation if you are using them with a group! They are also not intended to just be answered YES or NO. If yes is the answer, then ask Does evidence exist? Is it consistent and pervasive? If answer is no, then the practice may not be in place and may warrant further discussion and “digging” We want to give you some time (7 minutes) to look through these resources.. Be sure to focus on the SCHOOL level questions only at this point – what questions might you concentrate on given what you have seen in the value added reports? Take time at your table to review the 3 docs. Which may apply to your setting/needs? How might you use these at the school level? PVAAS Statewide Team for PDE;

(Share at your table/with whole group) BUT, you need more info to go any further before ANY conclusions!! So, using the DD documents, where would you start? What are the first questions you would ask? There is no right answer – as it depends on the data of your school, the work in your school, where your school is with achievement and growth. Example: If we just spent the past year revising curriculum, a quick review of curriculum questions to do a final check may in order, then move on to another area. Or, if we have been focusing a good bit on instruction or assessment, then we might want to check those sections. In general, you may want to start by asking some “big” questions – do we want to focus on C, I, A or O? Or, is there one particular area that we think might be good to delve into in-depth? Give the group at each site 3 minutes to discuss: What are you starting to think about with regard to grade 6 as you saw all RED on the PSSA report for the last activity? Given a student’s testing history, across subjects… …what is the student likely to score on an upcoming test, assuming the student has the kind of schooling experience this school has provided in the past? More reliable at projecting future performance, even 3 years into the future, than the most recent state assessment score. PVAAS Statewide Team for PDE;

Given a student’s testing history, across subjects… …what is the student likely to score on an upcoming test, assuming the student has the kind of schooling experience this school has provided in the past? In PVAAS, this means that projections indicate what is most likely to happen for a student academically, or in other words, how a student will most likely score on a future test – if the student has the kind of schooling experience the school has provided for other students at similar achievement levels in the most recent year. The information in the yellow box here is really important to remember – the PVAAS projections are more reliable at projecting future performance, even 3 years into the future, than the most recent state assessment score. If you are not using these, you are missing crucial information. Why? Because these are a highly reliable source of information – that are based on years of students’ academic performance and not just one year. You have the power to change them! Fall 2015 Individual Student Projection Report Student’s Projection Use PVAAS Student Projection data together with other student-level data! Benchmark assessments Diagnostic assessments Common grade-level or course-specific assessments Attendance Behavior Teacher Recommendations This is an example of what an individual student’s projection report looks like in PVAAS. The red dots provide you with the student’s history, while the yellow square provides you with the projection of where they are likely to perform. Point out student projected score, projected percentile and probability/% likelihood as key data to use on this report. We encourage educators to use the projection data with other student-level data, such as benchmark and diagnostic or formative assessments, common grade or course-specific assessments, attendance data, teacher recommendations, and the like.
